Science fiction fans rejoice, as game developers NetEnt have a real treat in store for you with the new Elements: The Awakening slot game. Far away on a distant world, the elements have indeed awakened and taken sentient form. Each vies for control on this incredible new video slot and even by NetEnt standards, this is a real visual and audio treat. It’s incredibly entertaining too with a galaxy of animations and video sequences which delight fans of NetEnt games like Creature from the Black Lagoon and Dracula.
Gameplay on the Elements slot is also far from neglected. With the cascading reels style of play rather than spins, a free fall feature to go along with the avalanches and interesting wilds. This is everything you are hoping for in a space themed gambling machine and more! Read our full review of the Elements: The Awakening slot and find out what has us so excited about this cosmic game!
NetEnt have been evolving their control system for many years and although it appears differently on the Elements slot, this is just due to theme integration. All the stock options remain, bet sizing is controlled by the coin system and the only variation of note is that the free play game has a lower limit on some sites. With 20 fixed pay-lines in play on real money mode the entry level stake is 0.20 credits and the maximum 200. This should appeal to a broad variety of players and the high RTP and medium variance on the slot also lend a hand here. The pay-table is simple and clear, auto-play has all the options you expect and there is both manual spin and max bet spin for those who want to hit a button rather than sit back and watch. Graphics are adjustable for those playing on slower internet connections or more basic devices at a mobile casino. We think the music and ambient effects are both pretty good but you can disable one, or both if you prefer. Whilst the pay-lines can’t be adjusted in number, you can hold a cursor over them to highlight and, with all the action on screen that’s a very handy thing.
There are good, bad and ugly base games in slots. The Elements machine has one which is absolutely out of this world thanks to its animations and graphics. It shares the cascading reels mechanic with the Cosmic Fortune jackpot slot where symbols drop into position on the 5×3 reel grid rather than spin. This allows the use of an avalanche feature where symbols in a winning combination explode off the reels to be replaced fresh from above. This results in free falls or, to put in traditional slot terms – free spins in the base game. These are cumulative and, it’s four of these in sequence, which triggers the bespoke free falls features. There are four in total, each themed on one of the elements. Which you receive depends on which element you collected more of during the avalanche section and the meter above the controls keeps track of this. The elements are central to the symbols in the theme too. With the wild a stone cube inscribed with runes to represent earth, fire, water and wind. The top four symbols are the elements themselves, ‘awakened’ into character form. Our favourite is fire who looks like a right mischievous little fellow. Underneath the main element symbols sit a junior inanimate element tied to each of them. This is a nice use of theme rather than simply adding in playing card symbols. Sadly, entertaining as the base game is, the disparity between 4 and 5 of a kind symbol combinations is so massive that you need to be very lucky to land a big win in the base game. Mostly you will be auto-spinning to unlock one of the free fall features.

We don’t like to drone on about how amazing NetEnt’s graphics are but each of the bespoke intro sequences for the free falls games make them worth the wait. It might be a wait too – we’ve seen several hundred spins sometimes before a game triggers. When it does, this is what you get:Fire: The firestorm wild plays out in this round, burning symbols around it both horizontally and vertically. This seems to be the highest variance of the free falls games but the one we like the most.
Air: The air storm wild blows onto the reels randomly in the first free fall and then stays in place for the remaining free falls. It’s the position and number of those wilds on that very first free fall which tends to dictate how this feature plays out.
Earth: Earth isn’t exactly the most mobile element and so, the earth storm wild is a sticky wild which sits on the reels until they have been included in one winning bet line, three avalanches or there are no more wins. Typically, this is the least rewarding game.
Water: Water flows and thus the water storm wild cascades onto the reels and expands randomly with every spin. We think this is the least volatile of the free fall games and arguably has the best animations.
